Borrowing money from DUO

If you are integrating, you may be able to borrow money from DUO. For the course and the exam.

Can I borrow?

Are you an asylum status holder

An asylum status holder has been recognized by the IND as a refugee and has received the asylum status.

and are you required to integrate under the 2021 civic integration act ('Wet inburgering 2021')? Then you cannot borrow from DUO. Your municipality pays for your course costs and 2 exam attempts.

Are you not required to integrate, but do you want to anyway? DUO will check when you were first registered with the municipality. You can borrow until 3 years after. Even if you are from an EU/EER- country Link opent externe pagina in een nieuw tabblad or Switzerland.

Other people that are integrating, can almost always borrow from DUO.

2. Go to: 'Lening aanvragen' (Apply for loan)

For what can you borrow?

You can borrow in order to pay for:

• a course at level B1 or B2
• a course at level A2
• a literacy course
• the exam.

No money paid into account

Borrowing money means that DUO pays for your course or exam. The money will not be paid into your bank account. The amount that DUO pays for you equals your loan.

Do I need to repay?

Sometimes your loan is (partially) cancelled. This means you don’t need to pay back your loan. Or you don’t need to repay the full amount. If you do need to pay back the loan, you also pay interest.
