Already tried hard

You have 3 years to integrate. Have you already tried hard to integrate, but you didn't manage to pass the exams in time? Maybe you can get extra time. Or you won't have to take the exams any more.

1. Extra time

Sometimes you can get 2 extra years to pass the exams. You need to meet a few conditions. DUO will decide whether you need to do any more exams or not.

Conditions

  • You have taken part in at least 300 hours of a course. You can combine hours of an integration course and hours of a Dutch as a Second Language (NT2) course.
  • Your school is on the Blik op Werk list.
  • The exams you haven't passed you have taken at least 2 times. Both attempts at the integration exam and attempts at the NT2 exam count.
  • Your integration period started more than 2 and a half years ago.

Applying for extra time

  1. Complete the form 'Aanvraag verlenging inburgeringstermijn' (Application for extension of the integration period).
  2. Ask the school to complete the statement of course participation. This statement is part of the form.
  3. Send the form with the statement to DUO.
My school doesn't exist anymore

Does the school not exist anymore? Send all proof you have to show that you participated in the course: A contract, invoices or proof of attended hours.

2. No obligation to pass exams

What should you do if you really aren't able to pass the integration exams? Sometimes you don't need to do any more exams. This is called a dispensation ('ontheffing'). You can apply for dispensation if you have attended an integration course or a literacy course. You need to meet a few conditions. DUO will decide whether you need to do any more exams or not.

Conditions if you have attended an integration course

  • Your integration period started more than 2 and a half years ago.
  • You have attended at least 600 hours of a course. You can combine hours of an integration course and hours of a Dutch as a Second Language (NT2) course.
  • Your school is listed on the Blik op Werk website.
  • You have tried to pass all exams at least 4 times. No more than 2 of these attempts can be for the NT2-exam.

Conditions if you have attended a literacy course

  • Your integration period started more than 2 and a half years ago.
  • You have attended at least 600 hours of a course. At least 300 hours need to be a literacy course. The rest can be an integration course, but only if you started the literacy course before the integration course.
  • Your school is listed on the Blik op Werk website.
  • You must show what you have learned by taking a test at DUO. This test costs € 150. DUO will send you a bill for the test. After you have paid the bill, DUO will send you an invitation for the test.

Have you already passed integration exams? Then you might not get dispensation.

Applying for a dispensation

  1. Complete the form 'Aanvraag ontheffing aantoonbaar geleverde inspanningen' (Application for dispensation because of demonstrable efforts).
  2. Ask the school to complete the statement of course participation.
  3. Send the form and the statement to DUO.
Because of a difficult situation I don’t meet all the conditions. What can I do?

Did you attend at least 600 hours of a course or an education programme? But are you unable to meet all criteria because of a very difficult situation? If so, write a letter explaining your situation in detail. The minister will decide if you get a dispensation.
