Rules on exemptions from the Orientation on the Dutch Labour Market (ONA) exam

If you have spent 64 hours or more on the ONA course, then you do not have to do the final interview. If you are employed, you may not have to do the ONA exam at all.

Exemption

If you have an exemption, you do not have to do the ONA exam. You may apply for an exemption if you meet the following conditions:

  • You have worked for at least 6 months in the past 12 months.
  • You have worked as a salaried employee.
  • You worked at least 48 hours a month.

You can apply for an exemption using the ‘Aanvraag vrijstelling Oriëntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt’ form.

Letters starting from June

In June, DUO will start checking every application. Once your application has been checked, you will receive a letter from DUO. If you are granted an exemption, it will apply from the date of your application.

No final interview

If you have spent 64 hours on the ONA course, then you do not have to attend a final interview. You must follow the course at a school that is on the ‘Blik op Werk’ list. Once you have completed the course, your school should give notice digitally of how many hours you spent on it.
